About Zion United Church
A faith community rooted in welcome, service, and the love of God since the 19th century.
Our History
A legacy of faith, service, and community in Kingston's Pine Street neighbourhood
The story of Zion United Church begins in the mid-19th century, when a small but passionate group of faithful settlers in Kingston's emerging Pine Street area gathered to worship. Originally established as a Methodist congregation, the church quickly grew into a vital spiritual anchor for the neighbourhood, offering hope, community, and a place of belonging during Kingston's formative years as one of Canada's most important cities.
In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was formed through the historic union of Methodist, Congregationalist, and a portion of the Presbyterian churches, Zion enthusiastically joined this new national denomination. This union reflected the values that had always defined the congregation: a commitment to Christian unity, openness to new ideas, and a deep concern for justice and community welfare.
Throughout the 20th century, Zion United Church expanded its ministry, adding educational programs, a vibrant music ministry, and community outreach initiatives that addressed the evolving needs of Kingston's residents. The church building itself, nestled at 106 Pine Street, has been lovingly maintained and modernized while preserving its historic charm.
Our Mission & Values
Guided by faith, inspired by love, committed to service
Welcome All
We are an inclusive community that welcomes every person regardless of age, background, identity, or life circumstance. At Zion, you are welcomed just as you are. Our doors and hearts are open to everyone seeking connection, meaning, and belonging in their spiritual journey.
Serve Others
Following Christ's example, we serve our neighbours in Kingston and beyond through food programs, community partnerships, social justice work, and advocacy for those who are marginalized. Service is at the heart of our faith — it is how we live out love in the world.
Deepen Faith
Through worship, study, prayer, and reflection, we seek to deepen our understanding of God's love and our role in the world. Our faith formation programs nurture spiritual growth for children, youth, adults, and seniors, supporting lifelong learning and discovery.
Our Congregation
Zion United Church is home to a diverse, multigenerational community united by a shared commitment to faith, love, and service. Our congregation includes young families with children, university students finding their spiritual footing, working professionals seeking community, and retired members who have faithfully supported this church for decades.
What binds us together is not uniformity of thought or background, but a shared desire to explore faith honestly, care for one another, and make a positive difference in our wider community. At our best, we are a community that practises radical hospitality — where every person who walks through our doors is met with genuine warmth and acceptance.
Whether you prefer to sit quietly in the pews or jump into committee work, whether you come with deep questions or simple curiosity, there is a place for you at Zion United Church. Come as you are.
