Programs & Ministries
Nurturing faith, building community, and serving others — there's a place for everyone at Zion.
Children's Ministry
At Zion United Church, we cherish the faith formation of our youngest members. Our Children's Ministry provides a safe, nurturing, and fun environment where children can learn about God's love through age-appropriate Bible stories, creative activities, music, and play.
Sunday School meets during the worship service each Sunday. Children begin in the sanctuary with the congregation and are then invited downstairs for their own program, led by trained and screened volunteers who are passionate about helping children discover the joy of faith.
Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a highlight of our summer programming. For one week each July, children ages 5–12 enjoy a themed week of Bible stories, arts and crafts, music, games, and outdoor activities. VBS is a wonderful opportunity for children to make friends and experience faith in an exciting, immersive way.
Our Family Worship services, offered several times a year, are designed with young families in mind — shorter services with interactive elements, children's messages, and congregational songs that everyone can enjoy together.
Youth Ministry
Our Youth Ministry is a vibrant space for teenagers (grades 7–12) to explore their faith, develop leadership skills, build lasting friendships, and serve their community. We believe that young people are not just the future of the church — they are the church right now, with valuable gifts and insights to share.
The Youth Group meets regularly for a mix of discussion, games, service projects, and social outings. Topics range from exploring big questions about faith and life to addressing real-world issues like mental health, social justice, and building healthy relationships.
Youth members are encouraged to participate in church leadership through serving on committees, reading scripture during worship, and joining the choir. We also offer Confirmation Classes for youth who wish to make a personal profession of faith and become full members of the United Church of Canada.
Annual retreats and regional United Church youth events provide opportunities for our young people to connect with a wider community of faith beyond Kingston.
Adult Education
Lifelong learning and spiritual growth for adults of all ages
Bible Study
Our weekly Bible Study group meets Wednesday evenings for thoughtful, discussion-based exploration of scripture. Using a progressive and inclusive approach, we examine biblical texts in their historical context while considering their relevance for our lives today. All are welcome — no prior biblical knowledge required.
Book Club
The Zion Book Club meets monthly to discuss books on theology, spirituality, social issues, and faith in contemporary life. Past selections have included works by Marcus Borg, Diana Butler Bass, Richard Rohr, and Nadia Bolz-Weber. It's a great way to connect with others who love reading and conversation.
Discussion Groups
Throughout the year, we offer short-term study and discussion groups on special topics such as reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, care for creation, mental health and faith, and the season of Lent. These groups provide space for honest inquiry and mutual support.
Fellowship Groups
Building community through shared interests and mutual care
Seniors Ministry
Our Seniors Ministry provides fellowship, spiritual enrichment, and practical support for older members of our congregation. Monthly gatherings feature guest speakers, sing-alongs, seasonal celebrations, and afternoon tea. Pastoral visits are available for those who are homebound or in care facilities.
United Church Women (UCW)
The UCW has been a pillar of Zion United Church for decades. This dedicated group of women organizes fundraising events, supports mission work, provides pastoral care, and nurtures fellowship among women of all ages. Their annual bake sale and spring tea are treasured community traditions.
Men's Fellowship
The Men's Fellowship gathers monthly for breakfast, conversation, and service projects. It's a relaxed and welcoming environment where men of all ages connect over good food, share their faith journeys, and plan hands-on projects that benefit the church and community.
